Exterior shot of a loft conversion in progress

A tried and tested formula

Our Company are experts when it comes to converting lofts and attics. We complete up to 35 loft conversions each year, and in every project we undertake we stick to a successful, tried and tested formula which takes us 4-5 weeks to complete a loft conversion from start to finish.

We aim to make the entire loft conversion process simple, straightforward and 100% hassle-free for all our customers with the absolute minimum amount of disruption.

We always aim to communicate effectively with our customers throughout the loft conversion process and take into account any views which they express. It’s all part of our professional, personal and friendly service to build a quality living space.

What to expect

  • The first step to a dream loft conversion is to contact Whitkirk Building Services to register your interest in a loft conversion and for a free quote.
  • Our building experts will take measurements of your unused loft space and advise on the best course of action for a design, taking into account your requirements and ideas. We don’t employ any pushy salesmen.
  • Once you agree to proceed, our architects will design your new living space and we will manage the process for planning permission applications (if required) and building regulations. We will also take care of submission of final plans for your conversion to your local council.
  • When we have a date to start we will erect scaffolding around the area required. We work on an ‘outside-in’ philosophy so most of the work at the beginning takes place from outside your house.
  • An opening is created in your roof to allow for access and steel support beams for the dormer and floor are fitted.
  • Next, a floor joist is fitted and the building of the dormer begins, including the internal partition followed by the insulation.
  • A specialist roofer is then brought in to complete the dormer by tiling it and installing guttering.
  • Following partitioning of the loft and completion of the noggin, insulation for all the walls is put in.
  • The next step is to fit the windows and begin work on the staircase, which is when our work moves to inside the house.
  • Our qualified electrician installs cables and power points to the new room, taking into account whether you require a shower room or bedroom.
  • After completion of the installation of the new staircase, plaster boarding is installed and plastering takes place in the loft and on the staircase.
  • Flooring is then fitted by our builders as the final stages towards completion approaches.
  • Doorframes and skirting boards are fitted to the room. 30 minute fire doors are required if your loft conversion is on the second floor of your house.
  • A final inspection by a building control officer for compliance of building and fire regulations is made.
  • Decoration of your finished living space takes place by our professional decorators to your required taste.
  • Providing you are happy with the end result the loft conversion is now complete and ready to be enjoyed.
